Overview
YT-CM is a mica-aramid product supplied as paper and as tape, developed for railway traction motor insulation. Traction machines are fed from converters, run hard, and are expected to survive to a scheduled overhaul rather than to a convenient one — which puts sustained partial-discharge resistance at the centre of the specification.
The tape form matters as much as the material. Traction windings are taped rather than lined, and a tape that will not conform, or that loses adhesion at temperature, produces a winding that fails at the corners regardless of how good the base material is.
Built for converter-fed traction
- Discharge resistance — mica content addresses PD generated by converter switching
- Tape form — around 0.12 mm, suited to taping rather than lining
- Paper form — lower aramid fibre content, for barrier and layer use
- Overhaul-interval life — specified where insulation is expected to last to scheduled maintenance
Key properties
- Mica-aramid construction for partial-discharge endurance
- Tape at approximately 0.12 mm for conformable taping
- Continuous service at Class H temperatures, used to 220 °C
- Conforms around corners and transitions without cracking
- Thermally and chemically stable
- Inherently flame resistant
Applications
Railway traction motors
Main insulation taping for converter-fed traction machines.
Transit and metro
Traction and auxiliary machines with high duty cycles.
Industrial drives
Machines on variable-speed drives with significant PD exposure.
Rewind and overhaul
Retaping traction windings to original specification.
Standards and compliance
- UL recognised component — certification held by the manufacturer
- CE marked
- RoHS compliant
- REACH compliant
- Manufactured under ISO 9001:2015
Certificates of conformity and mill test certificates are supplied with each shipment. Third-party testing can be arranged on request where a specification demands independent verification.
Sizes, packing and supply
- Tape: approximately 0.12 mm, slit to width
- Paper: supplied in reels, slit to requirement
- Form: reels and taping spools
Quality and inspection
Every consignment is inspected before shipment and supplied with its mill certificate. For repeat programmes we hold the approved specification on file so a reorder repeats a known outcome rather than reopening the conversation.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between YT-CM and YT518?
YT518 is a mica-aramid sheet at around 50% mica, used as a liner and barrier. YT-CM is optimised for taping — thinner, more conformable, and supplied on spools. Same problem, different application method.
Is it suitable for hand taping and machine taping?
Both are in use. Tell us which and we will confirm the width and spool format that suits.
Why does traction need a different material?
Converter supply produces fast voltage edges and sustained partial discharge, and traction machines run hot with long intervals between overhauls. Plain organic insulation erodes under those conditions.
What widths are available?
Slit to requirement. Give us the taping width and we will supply to it.
Do you supply the matching resin system?
We supply the insulation materials. Tell us the resin system you use and we will confirm compatibility.
