Overview

Aramid pressboard is 100% aramid fibre consolidated under pressure into rigid sheet. It occupies the place in an insulation system where paper is too thin and a moulded part is too expensive: barriers, spacers, end fill and structural insulation that has to hold a dimension under load.

Unlike cellulose pressboard, it does not require oil immersion to reach its rated life and performs in air as well as in oil. That makes it the material of choice when a dry-type transformer needs the structural properties that cellulose board would only give in an oil-filled one.

Air and oil

The distinguishing property of aramid pressboard against traditional cellulose board:

  • In air — retains its properties at Class H temperatures without the ageing that cellulose suffers dry
  • In oil — stable and compatible with transformer fluids
  • Structurally — rigid enough for spacers, blocks and end fill that carry clamping load

Grades YT592, YT593 and YT594 differ in density and thickness range. Tell us the duty and we will point at the right one.

Key properties

  • 100% aramid fibre, pressed and consolidated
  • Continuous service at 180 °C (Class H), used to 220 °C
  • Performs in air and in transformer oil
  • Rigid — holds dimension under clamping load
  • Machinable: sawn, punched, milled and drilled
  • Inherently flame resistant, no melt

Applications

Dry-type transformers

Barriers, spacers, end fill and structural insulation.

Oil-filled transformers

Barrier board and spacers where Class H performance is required.

Large machines

Slot wedges, packing and support insulation in generators and traction motors.

Switchgear

Insulating barriers and support components.

Standards and compliance

  • UL recognised component — certification held by the manufacturer
  • CE marked
  • RoHS compliant
  • REACH compliant
  • Manufactured under ISO 9001:2015

Certificates of conformity and mill test certificates are supplied with each shipment. Third-party testing can be arranged on request where a specification demands independent verification.

Sizes, packing and supply

  • Thickness: 0.5–6.0 mm, typical range
  • Form: sheets; machined, punched and profiled parts to drawing
  • Packing: flat-packed, moisture-barrier wrapped, palletised

Quality and inspection

Every consignment is inspected before shipment and supplied with its mill certificate. For repeat programmes we hold the approved specification on file so a reorder repeats a known outcome rather than reopening the conversation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between YT592, YT593 and YT594?

Density and thickness range, which in turn changes the rigidity and the machining behaviour. Describe the application and we will recommend the grade rather than leaving you to pick from a table.

Can it be machined?

Yes — sawn, punched, milled and drilled. We can supply finished parts to drawing if you would rather not machine it yourself.

Does it need to be oil-impregnated?

No. That is the main advantage over cellulose pressboard, which relies on oil for its rated performance. Aramid board performs dry.

What thicknesses are available?

Typically 0.5 to 6.0 mm. Thicker sections can be built up by bonding; ask if you need more.

Is it compatible with transformer oil?

Yes, and it is used in oil-filled units as well as dry-type.
