Overview

YT822 is the industrial grade of aramid honeycomb, used where the structural and fire behaviour of the aviation grade is wanted without the aerospace qualification and cost. Its principal market is rail: train floors, interior panels, partitions and doors.

YT836 is the para-aramid grade in the same family, used where the highest strength-to-weight ratio is required. Both are supplied as core material for sandwich panel construction.

Rail and industrial structures

  • YT822 — industrial meta-aramid honeycomb for rail interiors and general structural panels
  • YT836 — para-aramid, for the highest performance requirements
  • YT822A — the aviation grade, where aerospace qualification is required

Rail interiors are governed by fire, smoke and toxicity requirements as much as by structure, and aramid honeycomb is specified largely because it satisfies both at once.

Key properties

  • Aramid paper honeycomb, phenolic coated
  • High strength-to-weight for structural sandwich panels
  • Dimensionally stable from −80 °C to 200 °C
  • Self-extinguishing, does not melt or drip
  • Non-conductive
  • Available in meta-aramid (YT822) and para-aramid (YT836)

Applications

Rail interiors

Floor panels, wall and ceiling panels, partitions and doors.

Transit vehicles

Bus and coach structural panels.

Marine

Lightweight bulkheads and interior panels.

Industrial panels

Structures where weight and fire behaviour both govern.

Standards and compliance

  • UL recognised component — certification held by the manufacturer
  • CE marked
  • RoHS compliant
  • REACH compliant
  • Manufactured under ISO 9001:2015

Certificates of conformity and mill test certificates are supplied with each shipment. Third-party testing can be arranged on request where a specification demands independent verification.

Sizes, packing and supply

  • Cell size: 3–19 mm, typical range
  • Density: 24–144 kg/m³, typical range
  • Form: blocks and sheets, cut to thickness

Quality and inspection

Every consignment is inspected before shipment and supplied with its mill certificate. For repeat programmes we hold the approved specification on file so a reorder repeats a known outcome rather than reopening the conversation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between YT822 and YT836?

YT822 is meta-aramid; YT836 is para-aramid and gives higher strength for the same weight. YT836 is specified where the structural demand is highest.

Does it meet rail fire requirements?

Aramid honeycomb is used in rail interiors precisely because of its fire behaviour. Whether a build-up meets a particular standard depends on the whole panel, not the core alone — send the specification and we will advise.

Can you supply cut panels?

We supply core material cut to thickness and profile. Send the drawing.

How does it compare to aluminium honeycomb?

Lighter, non-corroding and non-conductive. Aluminium remains cheaper where those properties are not required.

What skins are used with it?

Commonly glass or carbon composite skins, sometimes metal. The skin choice drives the cell size and density selection.
