Overview

YT822A is aviation-grade aramid honeycomb: a cellular core of aramid paper, phenolic coated, used as the structural centre of sandwich panels. It is roughly half the weight of aluminium honeycomb of equivalent function, and carries a specific strength several times that of steel.

In a sandwich panel almost all the bending strength comes from the skins; the core's job is to hold them apart and resist shear. A core that does that at very low density is what makes lightweight structural panels possible, which is why honeycomb is standard in aircraft interiors and secondary structure.

Why aramid rather than aluminium

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose cell size and density?

From the skin thickness, the panel span and the load. Smaller cells support thin skins better; higher density carries more shear. Send the panel construction and duty and we will recommend against it.

Can you supply it cut to shape?

Yes — cut to thickness, profiled and chamfered to drawing.

Is it qualified for aerospace use?

The material is aviation grade and the manufacturer holds the relevant certification. Whether it meets a particular airframe specification is a question for the specification — send it and we will check.

What is the difference between YT822A and YT822?

YT822A is the aviation grade. YT822 is the industrial grade, used in rail interiors and similar structures where the aerospace qualification is not required.

Does it absorb moisture?

The phenolic coating limits uptake. For long-term exposure, panel sealing and edge closeouts matter more than the core itself.
