Flexible Laminate AM
Flexible Laminate AM
Polyester film (PET) bonded to one side of Metastar® aramid paper. Offers one shiny film surface and one matte aramid surface. Used in motor slot insulation and applications where a single-sided dielectric barrier is sufficient. Class F.

Overview
AM is a two-layer flexible laminate: polyester (PET) film bonded to one side of aramid paper. It gives one shiny film face and one matte aramid face, and is the most widely used laminate construction in general motor manufacture.
The film contributes dielectric strength and a moisture barrier; the paper contributes mechanical toughness, thermal endurance and a surface that takes varnish. Bonding them produces insulation that outperforms either component on its own, in less thickness than using both separately.
Choosing between the laminates
- AM — film one side. Lowest cost, for slot and layer insulation where one face needs the barrier
- APA — film cored between two papers. Both faces are aramid, so both bond and take varnish
- AH / AHA — the same constructions with polyimide film, for higher temperature
AM is generally the starting point; move to APA when both faces need to be aramid, and to the polyimide grades when the temperature demands it.
Key properties
- Two-layer: PET film bonded to aramid paper
- One shiny film face, one matte aramid face
- Class F (155 °C) service with PET film
- High dielectric strength for its thickness
- Moisture barrier from the film layer
- Aramid face takes varnish and bonds readily
Applications
Motor slot insulation
Slot liners in general-purpose and industrial motors, film side to the slot.
Layer insulation
Between winding layers in motors and transformers.
Phase insulation
Phase separators where a barrier film is wanted on one face.
Transformers
Layer and barrier insulation in dry-type units.
Standards and compliance
- UL recognised component — certification held by the manufacturer
- CE marked
- RoHS compliant
- REACH compliant
- Manufactured under ISO 9001:2015
Certificates of conformity and mill test certificates are supplied with each shipment. Third-party testing can be arranged on request where a specification demands independent verification.
Sizes, packing and supply
- Thickness: 0.13–0.50 mm, typical range
- Width: slit to 1,000 mm
- Form: reels; die-cut parts to drawing
Quality and inspection
Every consignment is inspected before shipment and supplied with its mill certificate. For repeat programmes we hold the approved specification on file so a reorder repeats a known outcome rather than reopening the conversation.
Frequently asked questions
Which way round should the film face?
Normally film toward the slot wall and aramid toward the winding, so the varnish keys into the paper face. Confirm against your own process.
What temperature class is AM?
Class F, 155 °C, set by the polyester film. If you need Class H, the polyimide constructions AH and AHA are the equivalents.
Can you supply it slit to my width?
Yes — slit to any width up to 1,000 mm rather than sold from fixed stock sizes.
Can you supply die-cut parts?
Yes. Send the drawing or a sample and we will quote tooling and parts separately so you can see what each costs.
What documentation comes with it?
Mill test certificate, certificate of conformity, packing list and the commercial export set. RoHS and REACH declarations on request.
